Tree Planting

Today trees can be established in urban contexts better than ever via successful tree planting systems

Trees are one of the most valuable resources for creating green space within a metropolis. Nonetheless planting them in urban environments presents significant challenges as prevailing growing conditions often differ from their native habitat.

Trees that grow naturally in woodlands have almost perfect conditions: a protected and shielded micro-climate with plenty of nutritious, uncompressed top soil for roots, adequate moisture and sunlight.

On the other hand, trees growing in urban situations are confronted with severe challenges such as impermeable surfaces, unnaturally high temperatures during the summer, salted roads during winter, all sorts of vehicular and pedestrian traffic, as well as vandalism.

Below ground their roots encounter hostile surroundings with compressed soil, lack of room to grow and lack of water and oxygen. If roots succeed in developing there is the constant danger of damage from construction and road works and the like.

Successful integration of trees in man-made environments is a specialist task. By protecting them above and below the ground, as well as giving roots the opportunity to grow naturally, our innovative urban tree planting systems can establish conditions that resemble those of their native habitats.

We cannot copy nature to perfection but we can at least try and provide a breeding ground for creative ideas, green visions and healthy root systems.

Advanced root-friendly base system for plant pits

The most critical living and growth condition for urban trees is the presence of adequate quality soil for the roots. How to ensure adequate amounts of uncompressed soil under heavy-duty roads and pavements, has been discussed by arboriculturists, landscapers and engineers for decades.

We deliver simple, but efficient systems for full root growth control

Asphalt and paved surfaces are extremely vulnerable to raised tree roots and various forms of underground installations may also be damaged if roots are not controlled efficiently.

In order for trees to be able to integrate in their assigned locations, root barriers are used to control root growth in a desired direction without causing damage. Our products are made from either virgin or recycled industrial polymer and are available in various shapes and sizes, including modular units and flexible linear types.

Our irrigation and ventilation systems take all the difficulties connected to newly planted and mature trees in urban contexts into account

In order for trees to survive and thrive the soil surrounding them has to be well irrigated. Roots are unable to absorb nutrients from the ground if there are insufficient amounts of water and will wither through transpiration.

An efficient irrigation system supplies water to roots and not to a soil layer above. It will also provide vital root ventilation.

Irrigation is not only required for the biochemical process of photosynthesis, respiration and transportation, but also for the mechanical support of leaf and stem tissue. Insufficient or inefficient irrigation will result in decreasing foliage and fewer buds.

Until a newly planted tree is established, it may require staking, anchoring or tying in order to stay standing

Young and mature trees in particular are normally protected by the surrounding vegetation of their natural habitat, but trees in urban contexts are often left alone and exposed to the wind tunnel effect of the city (which can be striking), possible vehicle collision and the weight of leaning bikes and such like.

Below ground anchoring is invisible and does not interfere with a landscape design. This method effectively prevents root balls from moving and allows roots to become established in surrounding soil.

Above ground stakes are typically made to support replanted trees with a stem diameter over 10cm. If done correctly staking and tying will not damage a tree. However it is important that such a system is removed when a tree becomes established, typically after 2-3 years.

Tree grilles are available in a wide variety of designs and made from a range of materials

Tree grilles are generally used in heavy pedestrian areas. Grilles prevent soil compression in plant pits and admit rainwater.

All our models facilitate integration of an irrigation/ventilation system.

Some projects cannot be achieved with standard tree grilles. These require unique creative solutions. We can manufacture custom grilles, according to specific design and dimensional requirements.

Porous tree pit paving of resin bonded stone is an interesting alternative to traditional tree grilles and offers designers and architects new creative possibilities.

Protection of newly planted trees in urban environments can be critical for their success

Trees in urban situations are exposed to both vandalism, damage from bikes, cars and sweepers, as well as all sorts of night activities from animals and the like. This means that permanent protection may be appropriate in areas with heavy traffic.

Visible protection in the form of tree guards contribute to the image of an urban landscape and have an important design function.
